According to an article in VW & Porche March/April 1990 all close-ratio transmissions installed in 8V cars built after serial number 15102 are missing the circlips that cause the self-machining problem. According to the article, the wide-ratio and 16V transmissions don't have this problem. Anyway, they also have a chart with the article that gives the codes. Here are the ones for the close-ratio transmissions: FM, FD, FK, 7G, 2H, 4K, 4Y, 9A ACD, AEN Keep in mind that this info is dated, as tha article is old, (and VW&P is now European Car!. If anyone would like to interject, perhaps with some newer info, feel free. Hope this helps
