Loved your site,
 ...My suggestions.....
Leave it dedicated to mostly A1 vehicles....its a rare enthusiast
that attaches him/her-self to the old school style of the best
damn vw's on the planet "75-84". My first car was a 84 R-GTI,
after someone totalled it for me, I purchased a G60 corrado,
only to be very dissapointed with it. I sold it and went back
to a 83 R-GTI. Best car in the world. When I get one of my
pictures digitized, I would like to join your community.
Thanks, Tony

there installs and do the same for you. I would like to do that so

My engine is mostly stock apart form a K&N filter and a modified
air box, I put a eurosport exaust and an autotech header
on her, my interior is mostly stock except for some momo pedals
and a cabrio console, I don't have much money so for my
suspension I settled for some Boge turbogas shocks & struts with
neuspeed springs, I recently bought some 15inch Borbet's
off one of my friends for a nice price (i think there the type H
model). Last year I smashed the old girls front end so I
just cut it off and welded a early cabrio front end on it that I
found at a junkyard for $50, the fenders were a little
more. anyway I have a newer cabrio grill with hella H4's, some
euro bumpers a short shift kit and front spoiler from ABD,
a fuba antenna everything shaved off the body exept the door
handles, I also got a coat of new black paint.

this is without a doubt the best site i have been to. I read absolutely
everything. Ive been looking for a site like this for a while that tells
me a-1 stats and the good and bad of performance mods for my car. I bought
the car mostly as is, just upgraded exhaust. i have a good basic knowledge
of what to expect from these parts but the performance companies usually
dont specify all the down sides.thats why i like this site and companies
like ttunig. been driving the car for a year now and i love it. i just want
to know more about it. How can i get the facts and performance stats for
my car? thats pretty much it. just wanted to say i appreciate what youve
done here, very respectable, and ill be back fequently for updates. I wish

I do not currently have a vw. Many years ago (1990ish), I had a 1985
Jetta 2-door. It was a GREAT car...and by the time I traded it in it
was wearing 15x7s and 195/50s, was lowered, tinted, stereod, pretty cool
for a white guy! I have often thought of getting another one day...
General comments:
Your site is FANTASTIC. I was glad to see some folks that appreciate
the looks and performance of the world's first true pocket rocket! I
am thinking of buying an 83 or 84 GTI and using it as a daily driver.
I currently use a Taurus SHO for those duties...which is quite fast,
but doesn't get the kind of mileage a GTI would. Plus, I miss being
in the Vdub family!!!1

You have a FANTASTIC page. Keep it up! Check out the link to my page
to see my 95 Cherokee!

This is my 3rd Rabbit and first GTI. Got it for $300 from someone who
had been unable to get it to run for 3 years. He'd managed to install
the check valve on the output of the fuel filter into the input on the
fuel distributor blocking off all but a seep to the engine (took me a
month to figure that out).

I bought the car 2 months ago because it already had the 16v
conversion done to it. Not only that but it also had schrich
268's and every suspension component add on was already there.
The down side is that who ever did the conversion abortioned the
wiring harness for the 16v, so I have to use a harness from an 86
scirrocco 16v, I had bought to do the conversion on my 84 Jetta.
The process is slow due to a lack of cash flow for the project car.

I'm looking for advice/referrals concerning getting my 1984 black GTI
painted; things to watch out for, types of paint that are best, typical
prices, or any other advice along these lines you could give me.

I'm in Arlington, VA and want to find a reputable, as well as expert,
shop to have a paint job done. I do not want to have a chain botch the
job, but neither do it want to pay an arm and a leg.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, feel free to pass this
inquiry along if you think someone else may be able to help.

Thanks,

repaced OEM driver seat with one from junk Fiero for $2o to drop sitting
height and had custom slide mechanism fabricated which allows seat to go
up and forward via inclined plane so my wife can drive it.(I am 6' 4" and
at the seat's furthest position, seat back touches front of back seat-this
is my preferred position of comfort) Replaced all interior carpeting and
lining and vent window rubber seals and sunroof gasket-cost as much as
what I paid for the car. Plan, eventually,to get a transmission out of a
scirocco so the RPM will be dropped by 500 or so when in 5th gear-the noise
I currently endure when in 5th gear drives me nuts!

General comments:
I am really glad the guy who sold the GTI to me is also a mechanic and we're
becoming good friends as this car has had to be worked on several times since
I got it a month ago-like a new radiator ,new headlight switch assembly,
re-wire horn, find source of oil leak,etc.).He does a lot of the work for
free while I look over his shoulder. I urge you to warn those considering
buying a GTI to take inventory of their own mechnical skills as these cars
are getting old and replacement parts are getting somewhat harder to find.

Scirroco 16v front brakes. GTi alloy wheels. Recaros from a wrecked 83 Scirroco,
re-upholstered in black to match the interior. This car sat for YEARS and I am the
second owner. it has a fair amount of surface rust but will soon go into a friend
garage for a ground up restoration.
General comments:
Finally a page dedicated to the water-cooled enthusiasts who started it all! Alot
of great info. I can't wait to put this site to good use restoring my car. I also
own a 1981 Rabbit Pick-up. When I told my "un-believer" friends what I was about
to buy they cast a curious eye upon me as though I were crazy. I am crazy. Too
crazy about VWs.

this site is great, it is nice to know that there are other complete nutcases
out there who know a great car when they drive one. i'm on my third MK1 gti and
have been lucky enough to not crash one yet (jinx) although after spending
a lot on my current car i have let in get a bit run down the past year as i
have been living in ireland and find it harder to get parts than you guys
probably do. kieth you know what your talking about when it comes to Gti's
and your page has really helped as i am only an amateur mechanic ( i do a
top class stereo install but not much else) hoping to move to minneapolis
this winter and will be looking for a gti "rabbit" as it is called over there,
hopefully i get a good one and carry on tuning and styling the Mk1 untill i die.
keep adding the tips.

P.S. your gti's a beauty i hope you don't get to miffed with her breaking down
that you sell her, but if you do give me a shout. thanks very much daz.

I just got this car a couple of months ago and have been slowly doing
some much needed body and mechanical work on it. My intent was to use
the engine from it in my 82 Rabbit, but I have decided to try to restore
this GTI and drive it. I haven't had time to get into the technical parts
of the 16V engine, but it is out of an 87 Scirocco, which puts the air
box on the same side as the original Rabbit. The car has Sendel 15"
wheels with 195/50 tires and some sort of aftermarket free flow exhaust
sytem with a dual down pipe. With the stock 84 GTI trany the 5th gear
is just to low for cruising at 75 mph for very long, so that is going to
have to be changed. The car is black with the original dark blue interior.
This is the first black car I have every owned and it is growing on me.
After all of the much needed body work is done, I think I will have it
repainted black again.

I think that your page is the best and most helpful on the net when it
comes to the GTI's. I also have a question. Have you ever thought about
puting a VR6 in a rabbit GTI? It has been on my mind for some time now
and I am thinking about doing this with my own if it'll fit. And if I can,
try to squeeze a turbo in there. but anyways, I think that your page is
great and I'll definatly be stoping by again.

I am the second owner of my white 1983 GTI. I bought it in Jan of 1984 with
7,000 miles. It has been stored since 1994. It now has 90,000. I am planning
on a serious clean up and shaping up for at least monthly driving. I have
always loved this car. It is pretty much in one peice but I need a veriety
of small pieces and anything interior related. If anyone can take some time
to tell me any sources of parts I would much appriciate the info. Also I have
a line on a 1984 black GTI in St. Peters MO that has some potential. I looked
at it as a parts car but it is in to good of shape for that. Love the site hope
you get a larger hard drive when I am done I will send photos Mike

None really, I paid £50 for it and it needs its annual test, so I'm not sure

General comments:
My car has a 1.8 instead of the 1.6 GTi engine it should have, so it was even
more of a bargain. The extra 2bhp will come in handy when and if it's legal
after its test on the 20 February. I plan to change the rotten tailgate and
front driver's wing (fender) as it will be embarrassing to be seen in the car,
although at 110 mph, I doubt anyone will see it. Hopefully I'll have another
Rabbit badge for the back, when a guy I e-mailed said he could help me out.
They are like gold-dust or worse to find here, as most of you will now know
thanks to the internet, we, in England and the rest of Europe only had the A1
called Golfs from 1974.

None other than trying to slow down the rust from Northeast Ohio road salt and
putting silicone caulk arround the windshield to keep out water and the general
fixing that a 18 year old car with 190 thousand miles requires.
General comments:
I'm glad to find your site and I've bookmarked it. I bought this GTI in August
2001, the guy selling it claimed it got 40 mpg and I needed a car to get me to
medical appointments at a Veterans Hospital 60 miles from home, not only is
it the first VW I've owned, it's the first car I've owned and I will turn 50
years old in a couple of months. I've been driving pick ups, vans, and motorcycles
for the last 34 years and must say if I would have known how much fun these
GTI's are to drive I would have bought one years ago. I am now a total novice
and am learning all I can about my GTI, 40 mpg was a load was one of my first
lessons, I get 28.5 after a tune up and all new filters and I've been told
that's not bad, I rebuilt a motor in a European VW bus that my Grandfather
bought new in Germany in 1971, the rebuild was just a top end and that was in 81.
the biggeat problem we have here is rust, I am putting new front brake pads, a
rotor, and a caliper on my GTI and when I went to jack it up the jack knocked
off huge pieces of rust, I think restoration is not realistic with this Rabbit
but I am going to try to make it last as long as possible, given I'm not concerned
about looks and all the information on the internet and sites like yours I should
be able to keep a mechanicly sound, good running, Rustoleum covered rust bucket
GTI rolling for another 18 years, thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.

keith, i have been checking out your page off and on when i feel like it but tonight
i had an apiphany: your car is the coolest car here. i was looking at your suspension
pics and was stoked on how clean even your suspension is. not just that, turbo. everything.
and above all it apears pretty close to stock. my friend has a red early model rabbit
and he has followed the same route. outside is stock: but with duckbill spoiler and one
touch i really like is he replaced his antenna with a newer one off a 16 valve or all the
mk4s but its in the original place; i think i may have to cramp his style on that one.
also he has euro tail lights, a mod us rabbit gti owners are not fortunate enough to be
able to do. anyway i love your sight (would have been lost swaping my euro bumpers some
years ago if not for you) and your car.

I am Max of Max's German Car located at 15020 Oxnard st Van Nuys (Los Angeles) CA USA

1975-2002. I take credit cards and ship. I give a 10% referral fee if someone sends me
a customer. My phone number is 818-787-9138. If you live in the Los Angeles area you
should bring your VW or any car to me for repair.I am very honest and am a skilled
mechanic. My prices are fair and I do most of the work myself. Otherwise you should
definitely buy your VW parts from me. Moreover, if you know of anyone smearing my
reputation, let me know and I will owe you one. Thanks for your time; Max

I'm very impressed with your site, alot of the information and work you have done
to your car has been used on mine. Its good to see a sight dedicated to the A1 plateform,
and those that have passion for these cars.
