2.0L Turbo
General comments:

Hi,

Love your new turbo page. Perhaps you can give me some advice
on my turbo project.

I've installed a custom turbo (small one) with a G60 intercooler
and some hardware store intercooler plumbing utilizing pvc and
rubber elbows. Not a good idea hugh? Nonetheless, I'm still
able to see 7 lbs of boost at 5000rpm on my 10:1 (crazy, I know)
2.0L motor . Got some questions on the install.

1. Serious turbo lag up to 4000 rpm and then NO power after
5000 rpm. Why?

1a. I'm running the Hor 270 cam. Too much overlap?

2. The hose going into the intake manifold (not the PCV breather)
with the brake booster(?) and other vacuum tees attached, should
this still go there or should it go into the turbo inlet?

3. The hose going into the rubber boot next to the throttle body
(also goes into the charcoal canister I think). Should this also
be going into the turbo inlet or outlet.

Right now the car is running weaker than stock. I also have the
exhaust just exiting from the side of the turbo and not connected
to the system. Does this increase turbo lag?

BTW, I've got the ignition back on 6 degrees advance and using the
Audi 5000 warm up regulator and I'm getting no pinging at all even
at 7 lbs.

Thanks for any tips.

Aren't A1 GTIs just the most fun-to-drive cars to come into
existence?!!! I just drove my '83 GTI w/ 195,000 mi from New
Jersey to my new home in Illinois and enjoyed evey mile of the
drive. My Dad bought the car new in Dec. 1982. We got one of
the first ones. In fact it was delivered 2 weeks late because
the enthusiastic Pennsylvanian hunters that assembled the car
shut the plant down during hunting season.

Anyway, our GTI has been and probably will remain the best
car we have ever owned. Therefore I feel I owe the car a
new life. Not that there is anything wrong with it but now
that I have a substantial income, I can buy all the performance
parts and pieces I have always dreamed about. Exploring your
page has given me food for thought on some of the aftermarket
components out there. I am still not sold on the turbo system
yet. I think I am going to go with a strong running 2.0L 8V.
I hope to get a reliable 150 hp. I hope the new coat of silver
paint, Cabriolet lower body work & bumpers, 16" TSW Trophys &
exhaust rumble don't give it away. I hope when it is all done
the motoring public will think to themselves: "That's a
Rabbit??!!"

It's not a Car.
It's a Volkswagen.

I've been driving and playing with my GTi since highschool.
It has been a blast to play with and with the G-60 in it
putting out well over 200hp it is very quick. The spax shocks
have been a great addition. The Tokico's(sp?) that were on
it made it very hard to drive. The spax make it smother
driving that my 84 stock cab, and it handles a lot better.
I have only had them on for two years but When they do die
I will buy another pair.

P.S. Great page

Only modification so far was I removed the A/C system. This
is a huge pain in the butt because you have to remove some
of the timing stuff and swap the alternator mounts, crankshaft
pulley and waterpump pulley. The pump it's self is hard to
remove, there must be about 6 bolts holding it on, and 6
more bolts holding on the huge steel bracket. Then you need
to add a spacer for the starter bolt since there used to be
an a/c pump brace mounted there... The car needs new
shocks/struts/springs, radiator, top, parking brake cables,
and exhaust. I want to stick with the origional (but crummy)
single outlet header. I'm thinking of buying a stock downpipe,
intermediate pipe and gaskets from the VW parts guy we go to,
and going to Midas to get just the tube that goes over the
rear axle (since they use generic mufflers, they don't have a
1 piece muffler/pipe combo deal) and then go to the auto parts
store and buy a $20 cherry bomb to stick where the muffler
should go. I don't really care about peformace at this point,
I just want it to be sound good, locally bought, and cost under
$200. Any comments about this exhaust idea? Email me.

Your page is great. I'd rather see pages focusing on people's
cars and what they've done to them, and things they've learned
than see pages of someone posting about someone else's cars.
Someone above said "keep it origional with picture postings"
or something like that. Hello? It IS origional because it's
your deal, not someone elses. I run my sites in the same way,
check it out. Stick to A1 stuff, there's already enough of
the others out there.

Most of my mods right now are in the suspension department.
They include: Boge Turbogas struts and shocks ('cause I'm not
autocrossing yet!), Neuspeed "Racing" Springs, Neuspeed upper
stress bar, 16 valve Scirrocco lower stress bar (because you
don't need to waste more than $100 on an aftermarket bar
when you can get the real enchilada from VW at a yard for $35!!),
Scirrocco 16 valve brakes front and back with Repco Metalmasters
(those bastards will stop the earth!), blue 15" BBS Jetta GLi
rims with 195/50 R15 BF Goodrich Comp T/A ZR4s (saw them on a
Mustang Cobra, drove it and had to have'em!). As for the motor
I have done relatively little because I plan on dropping in a 2
liter 16 valve next week! But here they are: "G" grind cam
(bye bye bottom end!), K&N airfilter with "Swiss cheesed" airbox (
that mod is completely psychological), stock throttle body with
a very teeny screw in the slide for the secondary to make it
"come on" a little faster:), 2" techtonics cat back exhaust.
Tranny mods: PEOPLE! Don't dump $180 on a Neuspeed or even
Techtonics short shift kit when you can simply relocate the
shift linkage to a hole that you drill yourself halfway down
the vertical portion of shift arm to. It takes 15 minutes
for a 50% reduction in throw.....easy:)

From the looks of your GTI, it appears that you own one of
the nicer specimens in existence. I've always loved the look
of a clean A1 GTI, but they are getting rarer and rarer.
It appears that you've struck a tasteful balance between
stock and custom, while keeping a little of the "sleeper"
personality all of us A1 drivers love. People just don't
expect our little cars to go so fast, do they. As for my
response to the page, definitely DON'T change it to include
anything but A1 cars, there are already LOTS of pages for A2,
A3, etc. cars, but all too few resources for those of us,
the few, the proud, the drivers of A1 Volkswagens. Keep on
providing a resource for us to look, get ideas from, and drool
over one another's cars. Take care, talk to you soon on the
MK1GTI mailing list...

I've owned my A1 GTi for 2.5 years. It has the original Cashmere
white paint and blue interior. The car was cheap to buy, inexpensive
to maintain, and a blast to drive. Unlike most VW enthusiasts, I don't
plan on ever trading up to an A3 VR6--they simply do not cut into
corners the way the older cars do. I thought GTIs were always about
handling, but I guess horsepower and luxury features--at the expense
of a balanced chasis--is what most people want now.  This is a cool site;
hopefully it will encourage others to hold on to their Rabbits instead
of junking them. I love what you've done with your car. You've made
sensible upgrades while still preserving its character.

Running a K & N airfilter, only Bosch replacement parts when possible

nice sound, even through a GTi stock muffler.

Awsome page good info, The rabbit Gti is the best pocket rocket
ever made, what other car can caome flying into a corner and exit
it at roughly the same speed entered in stock form? NONE My car
is slightly modified and there are many cars on the road with way
more HP than me and I embarass the hell out of them at the stoplight
grandprix. Who the hell would want an A3 vr6 when a slightly modified
A1 like mine is only .03 sec slower than a vr6 and on top of that a
A3 vr6 can't match the handling or raw feel of sports car that an A1
can provide. I'm not knocking the A3 Vr6 I think it's a beautiful car
but I'll tell you if I were to buy one I would also have to keep my A1
(I am greedy). I bought my 84 for $100 cdn and it has only a small
amount of surface rust that will be fixed for about $500 and it will
look like a diamond, the interior is also mint, get this it was a guys
winter beater I've put about $900 into it so far. my best pass is 15.8
sec in the quarter. Vw's rules keep up the good work man

I came about the idea for this progect by accident, no pun

Unfortunatly it was hit by a truck in my own driveway. As luck
would have it a friend of mine had an '89 Cabriolet with a
blown motor I was able to get from him at a great price. So
after a year and a lot of work I finnaly got it to great
running codition. I have pictures from the whole prodject.
My next goal after the M3 fenders are complete, is to put the
dash from the Jetta into it. If anyone has ever done this or
ever seen this done could you please email me.

Early Scrirocco 2 alloy wheels, BBS front spoiler. The
car is my wife's and is in excellent condition. We're
the second owners for almost four years. Looks like a GTI
but doesn't have the Recaro seats or GTI rims. I drive an
'82 Rabbit Pickup that I'm currently restoring. Both cars
are gas with a five speed.

Nice web page. I'm looking for info on fixing my speedo. The
speedometer works but not the odometer, either the trip or
the main. Is it possible to rebuild the unit? Or do I have
to find a whole instrument cluster?

I'm gonna post this on the watercooled VW newsgroup.

BTW, what's with the A1, A2, etc. designations?

Have started a project with my son. We bought an '82 A1 2 door
(the recipient) and an '87 Scirocco 16-v (the donor). At this
point we have stripped the rabbit pretty clean and have started
the engine build. The motor will be built up as a 2008 cc 16-v.
We have already done a mild port and polish to the head. Pistons
are from Techtonics and will give 10.8:1 compression. Because the
car will be basically "gutted", we are shooting for 1,800 pounds,
complete! It ought to be "real quick". We'll let you know.

Acually, this is a Diesel Rabbit that I had. I sold it
2 1/2 years ago due to the 300,000 miles it had on it. My
dad bought it new in '81, and sold it to me with 170,000 on
it. I put another 130,000 on it, and had to get rid of it.
It was beginning to fall apart. I ended up selling it back
to my dad who now uses it to commute to work in. Presently,
I have no VW's, but am looking forward to getting an a4 Golf
sooner or later. By the way, you have the nicest Rabbit I
have ever seen in my life. Keep taking good care of it, and
never, EVER let anyone talk you into getting rid of it like
I did.

I pulled some nice looking tinted front blinker/running
light plastic assemblies off a junked Rabbit. Other than
that, I've put in a Clarion CD deck and some new speakers.
I've also intalled some clear driving lights under the
bumper. It's a pretty stock GTI.
General comments:
I'm wondering where I can get a set of side skirts like
those sold in Germany, not the ones that are integrated into
the fender-flares and bumpers like on the later cabriolet's.
I've seen them on a Rabbit around Lacey, and I'd like to get
some for when I eventually repaint it, so the bottom of the
doors won't get hit by rocks in the winter.

Really glad I found this site. Love my GTI and appreciate all the info.
I spend 6 months a year in Mexico and there our Rabbits are
"CARIBEs". Makes gettin parts and labor VERY easy. They DON'T
however, have any emmision control requiements for the engine.
Makes for a smoggy siuation but a far less complicated engine
compartment. Keep up the good work.

Well done web site, Keith! I agree with lots of the info, too!
The lightweight and "tossable" A1 GTI kicks ass from the factory;
adding a few subtle performance mods (not rice) leaves even brand

It's a red '84 I bought new. Came with factory A/C. Known
to family and friends as "The Attack Rabbit" I drove it daily
til '91 then put it up in my inlaws old rabbit house at their
farm for four years. Brought it out and drive it only as a stress
reliever. Painted it with new VW red last year. It just rolled over
60k original miles. I do need a new set of GTI mud flaps for it,
any ideas?

I just got the car, but i've owned another rabbit. So
far I've added a k&n air filter(ram air), a neuspeed throtle
body, tokico illumina struts with Hor race springs, and a
full exhaust. It is soon going to be painted yellow and
gonna have a built up 16v. My goal is to make it a lot
faster than my previous vehicle, which was an 82 convertible
that ran 16's in the 1/4 mile. Well wish me and all the
other wabbits out there lots of luck with our project cars.

My first car was an 1975 Rabbit built in late'74. It did have front
disc not drums but no power brakes,no power steering, no AC, 4 speed
car with AM only radio, no carpet, fancy cardboard door panels and
famous "puff board" dash. I paid $900 for it in 1984 with 68,000 miles
on it and a big hole in the driver's floor board from rust.
I wish I still had it.

So far over the last 4 years I have had my car painted,
with a set of Kamei G/effects, euro bumpers,a hood scoop,
fin, euro light conversion and 16 V antenna. The car is black.
The interior features are Recaro's(power),momo peddles and
shifter,with a Italvolanti steering wheel.Complete with a
12 speaker system, and a alpine alarm complete with power
door locks. At present a roll cage is being fabricated to fit
my car. The engine is still an 8 valve done though completley
with every possible bolt-ons available. However it has well
over 350,000 km and is ready for a winter rebuild project
which brings me here. I want to keep it an 8 valve and non
turbo. I would like to maybe upgrade the block to a 2 litre,
but am unsure whether I should upgrade the mechanical lifter
head to a hydraulic one. I would also like to go full out on
the motor, i.e bore it out with oversized pistons, port and polish
everything from the intake to the head. The parts I have are a
timing gear, cam, header, throttle body,European fuel injection,
oil cooler, thermosat and switch...you know!! Other enhancments
are the 16 inch monsoons which I am looking to upgrade to 17's.
4 wheel disk brakes, drilled and slotted with Brembo calipers.
Note I cant put my wheels on because the rotors are 11.0 inch's.
Complete sway bars except for upper rear, because at the time
my sub box would have interfered, but now there no rear seat so
I will infact purchase one. I lowered it a couple seasons back
with a set of ABD springs but have just recently spent the big
bucks on some H&R coil overs. Wow what a difference. Im sure
there is plenty Ive missed since this car is infact the sole
beneficiary of my earnings. What do you think of upgrading the
ignition coil to one of those Jacobs electronic ones. As well
as have you seen that new 4 point lower stress bar by euro sport
and will it interfere with my ABD lower sway bar. I hope you can
spend some time to give me some tips and maybe ideas soon. In
return I will send you soon enough a fully documented evolution
of David Mansolino's A1 GTI.

Just recently traded an old RX7 for a proper car. The car is
in a state of disassembly in preparation for the next autox season.
It will be fitted to the new FSP solo2 class specifications. Not
drivable yet but soon will be ready to have fun. Had a '79 rabbit
ten years ago and to this day is the most fun car I ever owned, even
as a non-GTi. My daily driver is an unmodified '96 Surf green GTi
2.0L and takes a close second to the rabbit. This car has two autox
seasons and one road race school on it. Time to retire the daily
driver, so when I saw the Rabbit GTi at the Junkyard I couldn't let
it go to the "CRUSHER" so I worked out a deal with the guys there and
now I have a car I'm sure will be even more fun than my first rabbit
'cause this one will be properly equipped and have more power.

This car has run a best of 11.79 @119 mph on slicks w/slipping

compressor for this coming Summer. I am hoping to compete in a
"Battle of the Imports" in California to surprise the JAP crap
out there. Maybe mid 11's at better than 120 mph. I may try a

I lowered it about 8 centimeters with Koni Suspension,
it has a cilinderhad with improved (polished) channels
(how do you say it in english), Bigger inlet valves, a
296 degree camshaft, a 4 in 1 exhaust, Sport pistons and
connecting rods and it runs about 8000 rpm. It is carburated
by 4*45 mm Weber carburators. I think it is about as fast
as a atmosferical Engine can become.
General comments:
I was really interrested by your turbo-conversion story,
i been meaning to build that for years, but i wanted to
use a Turbocharger and exhaustmanifold of a GTD 1.6 turbodiesel
and a programmable race injection system. What do you think,
is the fuel-enrichementmanour that you use enough? It is a
lot cheaper off course. What do you mean with the microfueler
you mentioned, is it a sort of programmable ECU or what is it.

first thing was to toss the original diesel and install a

it. The vagen's dropped about 2" and rolls on 16" Motoforms.
Rear discs are in, 2" exhaust is in, tunes are pumpin and the
2way sunroof is open. A '90 cabrio gauge cluster and Audi coupe
auxiliary gauges tell me wuz up. Soon to do: 5 spd, much needed
big brakes, black interior, fuel injection for sure!! (G60?????)
